 EB Thorndike1

Ephraim Barrett Thorndike was born in Camden, ME, on Aug 19, 1855, to Theresa Barrett and George Thorndike. In 1880, he became proprietor of the Canton Journal; he would continue this position until 1893. On June 24, 1885, he married Helen Kinsley. Following a two-week honeymoon, the couple moved into their house opposite the Gridley School. A year later, on April 25, the couple’s first son, Allston, was born.

In 1890, Thorndike, Joseph Warren Wattles, and James E Grimes met in order to form a co-operative bank, which became the Canton Co Operative Bank. When the bank received its charter a year later, Thorndike was its first president. In 1893, Thorndike and E.C. Thomas (also of Canton) founded the Rockport News in Rockport, ME; his interest in the paper did not last long, however, and he sold his share shortly after its founding. In 1895, Thorndike purchased the Norwood Advertiser and Review from Francis W. Crooker; he would continue as publisher for the next ten years.

In 1903, Thorndike moved to Medford and began publication of the Medford Leader; in 1913, he began publishing the Medford Messenger. During 1916, Thorndike was a member of the Medford Historical Society’s publication committee.  By 1930, Thorndike and his wife had moved back to Canton. Thorndike died on March 1, 1933, in Camden.
