Neponset Street1
Neponset Street was laid out in 1827 "from the public road near the school house, northerly of Stone Factory, across Neponset river to meet the end of the road in Dedham near Enoch Talbot's."; it was built to shorten the distance from Boston's Stone Factory in anticipation of the large increase in business that the erection of the Stone Mill would bring. In 1840, it was described as running from school house No. 6, over the meadow to Dedham line. The 1880 Committee on Streets recommended that the street be renamed "Norwood Street", on the grounds that "all streets leading into other towns should bear the name of the town to which they lead"; however, this attempt was unsuccessful.
