Canton Historical Society1
The Canton Historical Society was founded in 1871 to collect and discuss local history, many members in the 19th century also belonged to the Gibbon Club, a group that read and discussed ancient history. The society also began a tradition of fast-day walks in which they visited local historic sites. In 1893 the society received its state charter and in 1909 George Frederick Sumner deeded the lot on which the society's current building is located and served as the location for the Everett Tavern in the past. In 1990 the building was renovated with the proceeds gained from the auction of the family jewelry donated by Mildred Morse Allen.
