Canton High School ca. 1869-1912 (Dan Keleher Collection)

Canton High School1

In 1858 a petition for a high school was  presented by Nathaniel Dunbar and Virgil J. Messinger to the town. In 1869 a school house built especially for the high school was opened at a cost of $10,000 on Washington Street on the site of the LukeOil Gas Station. This wooden structure was used until 1912 when a  new structure was builot for the high school on the corner of Washington and Revere Streets with $20,000 donated by August Hemenway. In 1950 this building became the Hemenway Grammar School and in 1980 housing for senior citizens. The high school's present location on Washington Street was the site of the Elijah Morse Residence in the 19th century. The high school completed a  renovation in 2007.
