 Sherman Street1

Around 1856, a street was laid out from Washington Street to Canton Junction, which, when first built, was called the Dépôt; consequently, the street was named Dépôt Street, “a horrid French word,” as an 1881 report from the Committee on Streets declares. In 1869, the street was extended, and reached from Rail Road Street (now a portion of Chapman Street) to Pleasant Street . In 1881, a motion was made the Committee on Streets to rename the street for Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, whose former farmland was partially traversed by the street.
